Program note: I wrote this work while a PhD student in composition at the CUNY Graduate Center. It’s dryly humorous throughout, setting ten of Schumann’s aphorisms from his Musikalische Haus- und Lebens-Regeln. His advice includes, “From vocalists you may learn much, but do not believe all that they say,” and “You should neither play bad compositions, nor, unless compelled, listen to them.”
