Program note: Noesis was a collaboration with choreographer Hannah Weber for Periapsis Music and Dance. Hannah wanted to depict a group of friends whose relationships we’d watch evolve over time, and we also used this piece as an opportunity to explore more movement from the musicians and physical interactions with the dancers. Partly because the musicians are not infrequently entangled in the choreography, many of the movements are solos or duets. But as a concert work, Noesis becomes a suite that lets each instrument reflect on the prevalent themes, with the cello presiding almost like a narrator.
