Vocalise, a scene without words for piano and orchestra (2009, rev. 2010)

10 minutes; solo piano + 2*2*22-4221-tmp+2-str

The first draft from 2009 was about 8.5 minutes long and was a semifinalist in the 2009 Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition. I subsequently revised it, adding a little bit of time and slightly reducing the instrumentation. In one movement, with a slow-fast-cadenza structure, the piece gets its name from the fact that I created most of the melodic lines by setting texts from three plays by a friend of mine, sometimes even extended back-and-forth passages of dialogue, but the texts are not in the score. Rather, they served as a scaffolding that disappears once the structure is secure. The solo part is brilliant and virtuosic, and the orchestration, while not tremendously difficult, requires careful ensemble and balance. Quiet, haunted ending.
