Program note:
I wrote this work as part of Periapsis Music and Dance’s tenth season, for a collaboration with choreographer PeiJu Chien-Pott. Because of very busy schedules, I was unable to be present for most of her rehearsals, so it became the sort of collaboration where we work independently for a while and then touch base more and more frequently. Ultimately there was a blend of passages for which she choreographed to my music and those where I composed to her movement. What was originally the first movement became the finale, and timings were tweaked as we connected our conceptions. The final piece held together remarkably well but was different than either of us would have imagined at the outset. PeiJu titled her work SPLIT, and so Split Suite seemed an appropriate title for the music.
